Most people realize that moving to Baja will immediately help their finances and provide a unique opportunity to own oceanfront property. But you may not realize the many “challenges” you’ll face when moving to Baja, most of which will make your friends back in the States jealous.

Here are the “challenges” of moving to Baja:

Too much fun and travel. A round-trip from Baja to Puerta Vallarta costs around $200 and will get you there in about 90 minutes. The opportunity to visit fascinating destinations in Mexico, enjoy top-notch service and delicious food at affordable prices will make you forget about expensive U.S. travel. Other hot spots in Mexico include small old historic towns such as San Miguel Allende -voted No. 1 City in the “World’s Top Cities of 2017” Travel + Leisure List.- Mexican discount airlines such as Volaris and Interjet offer great rates year round, while Aeromexico is renowned for their unparalleled service.

Danger of a popcorn overdose.

With movie tickets at $2.50, you´ll find yourself at the movies once or twice a week. Watch every major American release in English -read the Spanish subtitles if you crave exercising the brain. Movie theaters in Mexico operate with the highest standards: top of the line technology, cleanliness and concession stands. And believe me, the popcorn smells much better when it costs two bucks. If you want to splurge, go for the VIP theaters. For $10 you get at-your-seat waiter service, menu offerings such as sushi and baguette sandwiches, beer, wine, and luxury reclining seats.

No time for yourself.

You’ll be surprised by how soon you are surrounded by new friends. There are so many English speakers in Rosarito, and the expat and Mexican community is so inclusive, warm and inviting, that everyone fits right in. Many social groups get together weekly and monthly, sharing hobbies, trips and common interests. Others work on worthy causes, giving back to local orphanages and animal shelters, or helping the local Boys and Girls Club. And wait till relatives and friends from the States hear about your beachfront property in Baja… Just make sure you have an extra-bed or two.

Trouble picking your favorite restaurant.

Baja offers a wide range of excellent restaurants. You can taste amazing creations by world-renowned Chefs such as Xavier Plascencia, or typical plates such as lobster with beans and rice at the Puerto Nuevo Village. The Rosarito-Ensenada area offers everything from fine oceanfront dining to savory taco stands, and so many options you can try a new spot every day.

Medical and dental checkups will become routine.

Affordable doctor’s visits, advanced medical facilities, and a straightforward scheduling system mean you will finally take charge of your health. The average cost of a doctor’s visit in Mexico can be as low as $40. Have a cold, go straight to the pharmacy where an onsite doctor can prescribe your medicine for $20. No need to make an appointment, and you can find pharmacies in every other corner. Regarding dental work in Baja, you can find professionals to perform anything from routine cleanings to implants and maxillary surgery at a fraction of what it would cost in the U.S. Not to mention the proximity to doctors and hospitals in San Diego. Rosarito is 30-40 minutes away from San Diego, with a short wait at the border for those who have a Sentri or Global Entry Pass.

OMG, not San Diego!

Yes, another problem when you live in Baja is you will find yourself back in the U.S. more then you thought. Expats who move further South down in Mexico often complain of missing their Pet Smart, Trader Joe’s, Target and malls. That’s not the case if you move to Baja. The short drive to San Diego makes it easy to go as often as you like and stock up on all your favorites. Not to mention the convenience of taking care of your banking, mail and other errands in America’s Finest City.

Living in Baja is a transformational experience, in the best possible way. Your mind will be active taking in so many new experiences and culture, while at the same time, the comforts of the U.S. will be close enough. Your only regret will be that you didn’t have these problems long before.
